Before we take a closer look at any possible ignition coil problems, it will be useful to learn a little bit more about what an ignition coil is and how it works.

The ignition coil, which is basically a small transformer , transforms the 12 volts from the car battery into the thousands of volts needed. As explained above, most modern engines have multiple ignition coils.

If you have several bad ignition coils, you could have a faulty ignition and difficulty starting your engine. If your engine misfires or stalls when you are idle or when you stop suddenly or accelerate, there could be a problem with your ignition coil. Misfires are more likely to occur when the engine is under strain, and they can generate emissions.

This is why increased emissions and the smell of gas coming from the exhaust are symptoms of a bad ignition coil. A faulty ignition coil can also cause the car to stall because of irregular sparks sent by the spark plug due to the faulty coil. If you notice that your car is getting less mileage from a full tank than usual, it could mean that you have a bad ignition coil.

This also means that fuel leaks can be a symptom of a bad ignition coil. Poor fuel economy can also be caused by a failing MAF sensor or a dirty engine filter, so these potential issues need to be ruled out as well. Collapsing the field induces electric currents in both windings. For ignition coils and many types of electrical transformer , the secondary winding is made with more windings than the primary winding. When the magnetic field collapses, it will therefore induce a higher voltage into the secondary winding than into the primary winding Figure 6.

When the magnetic field collapses, the voltage in the secondary coil will be greater than the voltage induced in the primary winding. The primary winding of an ignition coil will typically contain to turns of wire; the secondary winding will typically contain 15, to 30, turns of wire, or around times more than the primary winding.

When a spark is required at a spark plug, the ignition system will switch off the current flow to the primary winding, which will cause the magnetic field to collapse. The collapsing magnetic field will induce a voltage into the primary winding in the region of volts; but the voltage induced into the secondary winding will be approximately times greater, around 20, volts.

By using the effects of mutual inductance and by using a secondary winding that has times more windings than the primary winding, it is therefore possible to transform the original volt supply into a very high voltage.
